I have been in the states over recent weeks, during the Boston bombings and the seek out the perpetrators. It may astonish some British readers to recognise that although American open debate is undoubtedly wider and more robust than in Britain, sometimes America displays denial plus deflection when it turns out that the perpetrators are radical Islamists.
I think of the as 'Toulouse syndrome.' A great deal of the reaction to Boston can be quite reminiscent of what we saw last year after the shooting of eight people in France. From the very first attacks on French troops until after the third shootings in a Jewish school, both international and national news focussed on the probability that the lone gunman had been a significantly right extremist. This led to boasts that various right wing politicians   including then Chief Timberland Earthkeepers Australia executive Sarkozy   bore at least some degree connected with responsibility for the attacks. Presumed trails of culpability were sniffed out and fingers pointed.
Even so, once the gunman turned out to be a significant Muslim called Mohammed Merah, the conjecture ceased. Nothing much to determine here. Please move together.
Reaction to the atrocity in Boston has had a similar flavour. Before the suspects were identified, some on the political left possibly said that they 'hoped' that the bomber would likely turn out to be a 'white American'. Certainly when their dream had become a reality then current reporting in the case would be different. Remember fondly the way in which the attempted hard of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was laid right at the doors of Tea leaf Party activists and Sarah Palin?
In America, as in Europe, civil culture and the political class are extremely prepared for dealing with certain types of extremism. However they remain infinitely less in the position to deal with extremism when it comes from significant Islamists. When Representative Peter Master set up his committee to look into domestic radicalisation a couple of years back he was excoriated by left wing and Muslim groups in the US as well as many on the governmental right. They included the most common accusations of bigotry, 'Islamophobia' and provoking of a potential 'backlash' against Muslims.
Long before Boston, Rep. King needs to have been offered an apology by simply such critics. Instead America looks like it is going through that similar process of evasion which is so recognizable to Europe. Already Islamic leaders are warning of an potential 'backlash' and large parts of the media are doing what they can to be able to pretend that the faith of your terrorists is the least important thing under the rainbow.
