| Twenty-eight year-old Guyana Bauxite Company employee Juliano Seunarine of Tain, Corentyne, Berbice appeared yesterday before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, charged with dangerous driving and driving under the influence, causing the death of 84-year-old Christobel Hughes – the mother of prominent Attorney-at-Law and Chairman of the Alliance For Change (AFC) Nigel Hughes.The court heard that on August 15th at Pike and Lamaha Streets, Kitty, Georgetown, Seunarine drove motor vehicle PPP 4641 in a manner dangerous to the public, causing the death of Mrs. Hughes.Seunarine pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on the aforementioned date, he was driving under the influence of alcohol.He was fined $7,500. For the offence of causing death by dangerous driving, he pleaded not guilty,Adam Shaheen Jersey, and was remanded to prison until September 4, 2015.The accused was unrepresented.Police Prosecutor Corporal Deniro Jones, stated that on the day in question at around 23:15 hours, the defendant drove motor vehicle PPP 4641 on Pike Street, and, as he approached Lamaha Street, he failed to stop, colliding with motor vehicle PMM 6763.Prosecutor Jones further stated that as a result, the passenger (Mrs. Hughes) received injuries to her body. According to information received, a test conducted on Seunarine by police officers revealed that his alcohol level was 161 micrograms when the legal limit is 35.Kaieteur News last reported that Mrs. Hughes was being driven home by her son, Stuart Hughes, when a pickup truck heading eastward along Pike Street slammed into their vehicle.According to witnesses in the area, the impact of the collision was so intense that it resulted in the Hughes’ car slamming into the nearby Natoo’s Bar causing extensive damage to both the vehicle and the building.From all indications, Mrs. Hughes bore the force of the impact since the pick-up hit the car on the passenger side, directly where she was sitting. |
