Deon Cort, called ‘Capone’, a member of the notorious ‘Fine Man’ gang who was caught last weekend in Suriname has reportedly given investigators a detailed account of some of the gang’s infamous operations.According to a source at the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters, Eve Leary, Cort, who also gave his name, age and address as Michael Caesar, 26, of Lyng Street, Albouystown confessed to being with the gang when it carried out both the Lusignan and Bartica massacres in January and February last year.Deon Cort, called ‘Capone’He has also confessed to the killing of two persons during a robbery at the home of a goldsmith on Agriculture Road, Triumph, East Coast Demerara. The suspect was handed over to local police last Friday and brought to the city on Saturday. While senior police officials have confirmed that the suspect is in custody, they still remain tight lipped and are refusing to divulge any further information.According to one CID source, Cort told investigators that he had known Rondell ‘Fine Man’ Rawlins for quite a while. He said that in January of 2008, he was contacted by Rawlins who told him that he had some ‘revenge’ work to carry out in Lusignan. It was always believed that Rawlins was angered by the apparent inaction of the security forces to the disappearance of the mother of his child, Tenisha Morgan. The Lusignan massacre ended with the death of 11 persons and, according to Cort, the late Cecil Simeon Ramcharran, called ‘Uncle Willie’, and another wanted man, ‘Smallie’, were part of the operation. He said that he again linked up with the ‘Fine Man’ gang in February to carry out the Bartica attack; this time it was for money.Cort told investigators that following the heist, he received $900,000 and subsequently fled to neighbouring Suriname. He also named his accomplices who carried out the robbery in Triumph, on the East Coast of Demerara. The source said that Cort was held in Paramaribo after police in Suriname, acting on information provided by their local counterparts, swooped down on a community frequented by Guyanese. He is expected to appear in court on Thursday.Cort was one of 20 more gang members still being sought by the security forces following the demise of gang leader Rawlins last August. Among the remaining suspects still on the loose are ‘Sonny’, Richard Daniels called ‘Chucky’, ‘Not Nice’, White Boy called ‘Whitey’, ‘Ratty’ and Aubrey.“The search is not over.
