The Sounds prep for big 'Weekend' release
Throughout its 15 years together, Swedish rock band the Sounds has never dropped or swapped out one of its original members. It's such rare, lasting camaraderie that frontwoman Maja Ivarsson says has enabled the outfit to remain popular and sonically distinct in the ever shifting milieu of contemporary rock acts.
"Of course, every record is going to be maybe a little different, but at the same time, it can never be too different since it's the same five band members playing the same instruments," she says of the outfit's forthcoming fifth effort, Weekend, due Oct. 29. "We might think that we are experimenting a bit, but I think for most fans, it's still gonna sound like the Sounds."
Ivarsson reminisced about the recording process via cellphone just before soundcheck at a club in Toronto, the band's third stop on a brief North American jaunt that leads them to Santa Ana's Observatory on Oct.
For Weekend, the Sounds secluded themselves for seven weeks earlier this year in Sweden's renowned Svenska Grammofon Studion in Gothenburg. With its attached upstairs sleeping and living quarters, it functioned almost like a tour bus with attached studio, where the band could work around the clock.

"On this fifth album, we wanted to capture a little bit more of that live feeling, because that's what the Sounds is all about," Ivarsson says. "That's pretty hard sometimes to capture on a record, because when you're playing live, you have an audience and you can feed off each other's energy."
To ensure that came across, the band approached the album with a lot of pre production rehearsing in the studio as if actually playing a show Nike Jordan Shoes before laying down final tracks with producer Alex Newport, who has worked with Bloc Party, Death Cab for Cutie, and City and Colour. He acted more as an adviser than overseer, however.

Ultimately, the album evolved into an attempt to recapture the natural energy that went into their first album, 2002's Living in America, which comprised songs they had played playing live as teenagers for years. That debut garnered anticipation in the States for what the Sounds could do on stage well before they'd ever left Sweden.
"I remember our first show we ever did in America was at CBGBs," Ivarsson recalls, "and the second show was at Troubadour. We'd never been (there), but there were still fans waiting outside in Swedish soccer team T shirts and stuff like that."
That loyal West Coast reaction hasn't ebbed a decade later: The Belasco show sold out in about two hours, prompting a quick addition at the Observatory.
"I'm just really stoked to be coming out to California again," the singer says. "People know what to expect the Oakley Sunglasses Canada Sounds always put up a good show, and I'm not worried about the crowd not doing the same because our audience is always kicking ass."
"We kinda had a deal when we first started the band," she says. "We thought, 'Man we look cool, we have these songs, so let's become rock stars and become the biggest band in the world it's no problem.'
