Alberta Mounties Receive Bravery Commendations
RCMP Sgt. James McLaren, who received the Medal of Bravery from the Governor General in 2012, is one of three Alberta Mounties awarded the Commissioner's Commendation for Bravery in Edmonton on Tuesday.
McLaren was commended for risking his life to help save a suicidal man who had entered Arctic waters in Cape Dorset, Nunavut, in May 2009, during which McLaren also sank through the ice but was able to crawl back to safety.
RCMP Officer Fights Rough WatersRCMP Constable Deanna Hagen, was commended for helping a 13 year old girl escape dangerous waters near Cocoa Beach, Florida on November 9, 2009. At the time of the incident, the Atlantic Ocean was extremely rough due to the onset of Hurricane Ida. Cst. Hagen fought strong waves to reach the girl and bring her to safety.
RCMP Officer Risks LifeRCMP Constable Jeff Mulroy was commended for risking his own safety in an attempt to stop a man intent on ending his own life near Vegreville, Alberta on July 12, 2008. On that date, Hermes Belt Replica the man called Vegreville Detachment threatening to harm himself and police. CST. Mulroy and his partner located and stopped the man's vehicle. The man exited his vehicle recklessly waving a weapon. CST. Mulroy risked his life in an unsuccessful effort to have the suicidal man surrender. The man was fatally wounded by police after he pointed his shotgun at them. CST. Mulroy is now an investigator with the RCMP Serious Crimes Branch in Edmonton.
RCMP Officer Braves Arctic WatersRCMP Staff Sergeant James McLaren, commander of Gleichen Detachment in southern Alberta, was commended for risking his life to help to save a suicidal male who had entered Arctic waters near Cape Dorset, Nunavut on May 25, 2009. During the rescue, S/Sgt. McLaren sank through the ice but was able to crawl back onto the ice to safety. He then prevented the man's intoxicated girlfriend from also jumping in the water until the Search and Rescue boat arrived to bring everyone to safety. S/Sgt. McLaren also received the Medal of Bravery from Governor General David Johnston in October 2012, in relation to this incident.
