Chairman of the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), Bishop Juan Edghill, has said that there is a dire need for local government elections to be held as soon as possible.At a recent press conference,Supply NFL Jerseys, Bishop Edghill noted that the ERC regrets that the long awaited Local Government Elections are postponed but nevertheless urged all stakeholders to cooperate with the Guyana Elections Commission to speed up the process.“From all the outreaches that we would have conducted throughout this country, there is great need for local government elections.Many of the communities are without proper functioning NDCs,” Edghill told reporters.The ERC Chairman added that residents in various communities do not even know if a NDC even exist in the area.“Just recently, we were in a community on the West Demerara where the people don’t even know who the chairman is and I’m talking about responsible community leaders, who sit there for three to four hours trying to grapple with issues in their community…we would like to see local government elections held sooner, rather than later.”The Commission also encouraged participants and all Guyanese to prepare themselves for this process and to move away from any semblance of race-based politics to electing the persons who are competent and capable to get the job done.Meanwhile, Bishop Edghill added that enhancing ethnic security and harmony has always been, and will continue to be the focus of the ERC.He urged the Security Forces to operate within the context of their Constitutional mandate and always observe best practices and the rule of law. He urged the security forces to recognize that Guyanese are living in a sensitive environment and the opinions and concerns of the people must be taken into consideration when formulating their programmes and executing operations.
