Two detectives attached to the Major Crimes Investigations Unit testified to putting allegations of murder to the ex-husband of Babita Sarjou and his friend, Darrel Pronton called ‘Yankee’, who are both on remand for the capital offence, when the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) continued yesterday.It is alleged that Sarjou’s ex-spouse, Sharnandand Naraine, called ‘Anand’ of Lot 51 Seaforth Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, and Darrel Pronton called ‘Yankee’ of Lot 54 Broad Street, Charlestown committed the offence.Detective Inspector Suraj Singh and Detective Lance Corporal Jermaine Laundry were called to the stand by Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers.During their testimonies, both policemen testified to interviewing the accused at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown. According to the witnesses, the accused were told of the allegation against them and cautioned according to the judge’s rule.Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan adjourned the PI until Friday when Nigel Hughes,Adam Pelech Jersey, Attorney for Pronton is scheduled to cross examine the witnesses. Also expected to be cross examined is Detective Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mitchell Caesar, the Officer in Charge of the Major Crimes Investigations Unit.Assistant Superintendent Caesar testified last week. He was called as the final witness in the Voir Dire (trial within a trial). The Voir Dire was conducted to inquire into the circumstances. An alleged caution statement was given to detectives by Pronton.Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum and his team of detectives were able to crack the case on May 22, after they spent over five hours digging up a site at Naraine’s Lot 51Seaforth Street, Campbellville, Georgetown home, where they believed Sarjou’s body was buried.After digging the site, detectives recovered skeletal remains; they suspect, are those of the woman. However to confirm, police have since sent DNA samples overseas for testing,According to reports, Sarjou had left her home to go to the Diwali motorcade on the eve of November 4, 2010 with Naraine who had called her. He reportedly picked her up in his car and while she was sitting in the front passenger seat she was strangled by Pronton who was reportedly seated at the back of the car.Sarjou’s lifeless body was allegedly transported to Naraine’s house where he resided with his wife and children. Reports had indicated that Naraine had dug her grave two days before she was killed.
