A former immigration officer, now taxi driver, Dewayne Hunte, 27, of 56 Patentia Housing Scheme, West Bank Demerara, was yesterday granted $60,000 bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson when he appeared to answer a charge of obtaining money under false pretence.Hunte is accused of receiving $57,000 from Quacy Richards on December 21, 2009, by falsely pretending that he was in the position to obtain a Guyana passport for Richards’ wife Samantha Thomas.He was unrepresented and pleaded not guilty to the charge.Hunte stated that the incident occurred on December 19 not on the December 21 and he only received $40,000 from Richards to drop it off to a man named Jack to look after the passport. He declared that to his knowledge, Thomas was deported from St. Maarten and was in desperate need of the document to return.Police prosecutor, Stephen Telford, objected to bail for the accused and stated that the accused is a former police who worked at the Central immigration and passport office and is known to Richards.Telford said that on the day in question the accused and Richards had a conversation at a shop where Richards told the accused that his wife’s passport was up. He said that Hunte told Richards that he could have a passport done for him for $80,Off White Nike Vapormax Release Date,000.Telford added that Richards immediately handed over $57,000 and never received the passport.Hunte intervened to make a bail application for himself and stated that he is currently a student at the University of Guyana, pursuing the Public Safety and Security Management course.He said that he has an assignment due on Monday. He said he is known to many senior officers in the Guyana Police Force who are pursuing the same course. He also declared that he is no flight risk.He is expected to return to court on February 12.
