Discussions between the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown and a Barbadian contractor over the construction of a crematorium have officially come to an end with the contractor opting out of any possible deals.City Mayor Hamilton Green made this disclosure yesterday even as he disclosed that the municipality is now forging discussions with locals in this regard.According to Mayor Green, the Barbadian contractor said that he could not go through with plans for a crematorium here as such a facility does not appear to be precocious enough.The contractor has however assured the municipality that he will offer some useful recommendations, which could be utilised in future plans.For this reason, he disclosed that efforts are being made to attract local persons, a development which is already progressing well. But even before the construction of a crematorium can commence Deputy Mayor Robert Williams said that there are a number of procedures, which must first be taken into consideration.He explained that there is need for the involvement of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Central Public Health Medical Board, which must first approve such plans before they could be implemented.In the meantime, Mayor Green said that efforts would be engaged in earnest to rehabilitate the Le Repentir Cemetery.He noted, though, that such an undertaking will cost millions of dollars but is nonetheless inevitable if the cemetery is to remain viable.During a statutory meeting last month,Cheap MLB Jerseys China, the City Mayor regarded the Le Repentir Cemetery as being in an unacceptable and disgraceful state.At that forum he pointed out that urgent measures must be put in place to address the state of the facility, which has been notably losing patronage over the years.The cemetery which covers 201 acres, of which 20 acres was used to aid solid waste management, is currently overwhelmed by overgrowth which makes efforts by relatives to locate their loved ones buried there a near impossible task.The Mayor disclosed that as part of the municipality’s attempt to restore the cemetery to an acceptable standard a proposal was even made to involve relatives of the departed to assist with the maintenance of the facility, a move which did not gain much support and ultimately fell through.Then there was the attempt, the Mayor disclosed, to encourage undertakers to take possession of sections of the cemetery with the expectation that they would maintain and transact the relevant business.However this was another proposal that the municipality did not see to fruition.The municipality in its 2009 budget has allocated a total of $28M to maintain the cemetery, an amount it is expected to garner through property taxes, market fees and other avenues of revenue collections.
