Walnut Station completed on Greenway Trail
The story of Whittier once thriving walnut industry comes to life in words, pictures and plants at the Greenway Trail newest exhibit, the Walnut Station.
The city held a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday morning at the new Walnut Station to mark the completion of work on the interpretive exhibit and a bioswale (urban landscaping for an environmentally friendly runoff ditch). Walnut Station pays homage to Whittier most beloved and well known tree. A venerable Paradox Hybrid Walnut Tree planted in 1907, all that is left of what was once a major industry in the early agricultural days of the City, according to the city website.
Seedlings from the tree, a cross between an English Walnut and a Black Walnut, have been carefully dug up and replanted. The daughter trees have been planted at the Walnut Station to ensure the tree will always be part of the city.
The station also describes the water conservation benefits of the bioswale, Nike High Heels Boots which manages urban runoff. The bioswale runs from Pacific Place to Pickering Avenue.
The grant also paid for the native plants demonstration garden at the Laurel Station, signs directing trail users between the Abercrombie Nz New Market San Gabriel River Trail and the Greenway Trail, and trail maps.
