Daniel Winkler outpitching top prospects at Double
Casual fans haven't heard a lot about Winkler because he was a 20th round pick out of Central Florida in 2011, not a first rounder like Butler (2012) or Gray (2013). And, I must admit, I didn't know a lot about him until he started rocketing up the minor league ladder. He led the minors in strikeouts last season with 175.
I checked in with some folks who have seen Winkler pitch in Tulsa. The 24 year old has a good fastball that he keeps Dr Dre Australian Tour down in the zone. The 6 foot 2, 210 pound right hander has a funky delivery, but he has impeccable control and works the corners of the plate really well. He's very tough, mentally and physically."That's the million dollar question," Riggs said. (Dean Humphrey, Grand Junction Sentinel)
The way he pitches makes a statement for himself. I know our people like him."
While Winkler has outpitched both Butler and Gray, that doesn't necessarily mean the Rockies look at him Buy Mont Blanc Online Australia as the better prospect. Remember, the organization has a lot of money tied up in Butler, and especially Gray, who signed for $4.8 million.
I'm betting that both Butler and Gray reach the big leagues before Winkler, but it wouldn't shock me if Winkler got the call first. It's tough to handicap right now.
Edward   Gray will certainly be considered for promotion, but when he actually gets called up is a question I'm not sure Cheap Ray Ban Australia the Rockies even have the answer for right now.
I do think he will bypass Triple A when the time comes. The same goes for Butler.
Despite a couple of rough starts, Gray has pitched well at Double A, going 2 2 with a 3.64 ERA. He's still learning to pitch and not just blow the ball by hitters with his 98 mph fastball. Typically, his fastball is coming in at 93 94, but the pitch has good movement and he's learning how to mix in his secondary pitches.
As reliever Chad Bettis Discount Ray Ban Wayfarer has learned, you can't Beats Br Dr Dre Australia thrive in the big leagues by simply throwing pure heat by hitters. That's why the Rockies will take their time developing Gray. And, as you mentioned, his defense and speed in the outfield are very valuable.
Though manager Walt Weiss puts emphasis on defense, he wants to get Dickerson's bat in Oakley Sunglasses Australia the lineup as often as possible. I think Weiss has done an excellent job using all of his outfielders. However, when Michael Cuddyer's hamstring heals and he comes off the disabled list, playing time will be harder to find for Stubbs, Barnes and Dickerson.
Mike   It's a little early to be talking trades, especially with Cuddyer on the DL. If he comes back healthy, then the Rockies would have some leverage and flexibility to make a trade.
In my mind, if the club is in contention come late July, it's going to need to bolster its bullpen. Cheap Fake Ray Bans Australia Trading an outfielder might help get a deal done, but if the Rockies want an impact reliever, I'm thinking they would have to give up a pitching prospect, too.
Bottom line: For me to speculate on who would be traded, and to where, would be total speculation at this point.
Lars   I totally disagree with you on this topic. I think Wright is a very good coach, and I think his pitchers Buy Beats By Dre Cheap Online would tell you the same thing. He understands pitching, and just as important, he knows how to communicate.
Your Morales example is just plain wrong. Morales was not that good in Boston, was only a spot starter there and was left off the World Series roster in 2013. Ideally, Morales would be in the Rockies' bullpen, but injuries have forced them to put him in the rotation. I think Wright has done a good job of coaxing the best out of a pitcher who's been inconsistent his entire career.
You mention Hamel, yet you don't say anything about the job Wright has done working with Jordan Lyles this season, or helping Jorge De La Rosa come back from Tommy John surgery to win 16 games last season.
Wright has been a terrific coach and I challenge you to find anyone on the staff or another reporter who thinks differently.
This is weird, Karl. I called up Rockies PR guru Matt Whewell to get the X's and O's on this question, and at that exact moment the Rockies announced that Tulo had been voted the National League player of the month for April.
So, obviously, consideration for Blackmon and Morneau didn't hurt Tulo. Those ballots are then given to MLB to process.
We vote on a player of the month, a pitcher of the month and a rookie of the month. For the record, I did vote for Tulo.
When, after last season and the start of this season, will the Rockies and Walt Weiss realize that Matt Belisle does not have it anymore?
  Jeff Sandman, Greenwood Village
Jeff   I understand your frustration with Belisle, but Weiss is not about to dump Belisle and simply give up on him.
