THE TV COLUMN Gentleman strives for Odd Couple chemistry
CBS wouldlove for How to Be a Gentleman to bring to mind The Odd Couple (kids, ask your grandparents) for today's generation of viewers. But David Hornsby is no Tony Randall and Kevin Dillon is no Jack Klugman.
Still, there's a lot of Felix and Oscar in these two former high school classmates who reconnect years later. One is, indeed, a well mannered neat freak and the other is a likable slob.
More precisely, Hornsby plays Andrew Carlson,a manners columnist for a men's magazine. Dillon plays Bert Lansing, the eternally optimistic owner of a fitness center.
Dillon really didn't have to retrain. His new character is, for all intents, exactly the same dude as Abercrombie Fitch Australia Pty Ltd Johnny "Drama" Chase, his character on HBO's Entourage. It's as if now that Entourage has finished its run, Johnny Drama simply opened a fitness center.
Hornsby (who happens to be married to Bones' Emily Deschanel) created the series by adapting the John Bridges book of the same name.
Andrew is all stiff and proper. When word comes from his editor to loosen up to be more relevant to modern readers, he knows he must take drastic measures. He must learn to adapt to the magazine's sexy new imageor be fired.
Andrew runs into his old high school bully Bert (he's reformed) and hires him to be his life coach. Hilarity ensues.
