SOUTHBURY   The town has not settled on an unchangeable replacement for its retiring public works director, so it offers appointed its road foreman to become interim head of the unit while officials conduct a much more thorough search.
Foreman James Sugden will need over as acting general public works director to replace Jeff Crowe, who is retiring after a decade of service in Southbury.
A search committee reviewed applications from 12-15 people who wanted the job, as well as interviewed three finalists, but it did not find a person with the appropriate skills to take over, Primary Selectman Ed Edelson said.
"The public performs director is a critical role in the town's organization," he said. "We wanted to make a much more concerted effort to identify plus recruit that individual but became aware we needed more time."
