| The over 600 graduates of the University of Guyana Institute of Distance and ContinuingSections of the audience during the graduation blackoutEducation (IDCE) were urged to strengthen their will to succeed in order to achieve their dreams, when the Institute hosted its 38th Convocation in the George Walcott Lecture Theatre, at the Turkeyen Campus of the University of Guyana, this past Saturday.Justice Dawn Gregory addressed the graduates. In her congratulatory message at the ceremony, she went on to impart the wisdom of approaching the world with the right attitude in pursuing their paths in life.Justice Gregory advised the graduates to heed the examples of previous success stories. She urged them to draw inspiration from people like Steve Jobs – the inventor of the Ipod, Ellen DeGeneres, Oprah Winfrey and the multibillion-dollar bestselling Harry Potter novelist, J.K Rowling.The Supreme Court Judge shared a quote from J.K Rowling, “You might never fail on the scale I did,Dwight Howard Hawks Jersey, but some failure in life is inevitable. It is impossible to live without failing in something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not live at all; in which case you fail by default.”The featured speaker shared this quote and the subsequent success story of the famous author toValedictorian Rockwell Delph receiving Overall Best Graduating Student award.highlight to the graduates the importance of not allowing fear to hinder their aspirations. She cited that the author managed to build a solid foundation for herself out of her failures.“She did not allow her fear of failure to prevent her from following her dreams,” said Justice Gregory. “They (Winfrey and Rowling) carried within themselves the power to think and imagine. They both changed their world magically. We too have the ability to change our world.”As the ceremony continued with graduates receiving their certificates there was a power outage, leaving some recipients to conduct their acceptance speeches in the dark.However, this did not prevent the Valedictorian, Rockwell Delph, from conducting his speech. Rockwell passed with distinctions in Industrial Relations and Management. In his speech, he highlighted the importance of preparation and commitment in achieving one’s success. His speech was even more impactful as the power returned as he thanked his fellow graduates, lecturers, tutors and mentors for their continued support.The Valedictorian received the award for “Overall Best Graduating Student” from the Institute.The programme with the most graduates was the Industrial Relations and Management programme with 82 graduates. Other programmes included Early Childhood Education, Supervisory Management, Marketing Management and Human Resources Management amongst others.Senior IDCE officers in attendance included Director Winifred James-Kippins, Deputy Director Francis Glasgow, Resident Tutor Raquel Fraser and Administrative Officer Shawn Long.(Nicholas Peters) |
