The defendants pleaded not guilty, when the charges were read to them.Somersall, in a bail application, told the court that his client is a former member of the Guyana Police Force and is now employed with a security firm. He said that the police do not have physical evidence against the woman. He noted that the articles mentioned in the charges, were not found in his client’s possession.Mohanlall told the court that his client has an unblemished record. He indicated that the man is a driver, attached to the same security firm and would normally deliver packages, when he is instructed to by his superior; hence the owner of the company should be charge of the offences. He added that his client was unaware of the items that were found in the package.Amsterdam told the court that his client is married and is a father of five.He indicated that court sittings in the North West District do not occur regularly and as such should form a special reason for his client to be granted bail. However, Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford objected to bail on the grounds of evidence against the defendants. He said that the evidence would show that Gibson gave the package to Wilkinson to be delivered to Port Kaituma. He said that when the illegal items were found in Holland’s possession, an investigation was executed, hence the other defendants were arrested and charged of the offences. The Magistrate refused bail and ordered Holland and Waldron to make their next court appearance on February 2, 2011 at the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrate’s Court.
