A Mahaicony pensioner escaped serious injury or possible death yesterday afternoon after he was rescued by his niece from his burning two-storey house.Smoke billowing from the man’s house late yesterday afternoon.Around 17:30 hrs, fire of unknown origin completely destroyed the home of 72-year-old Rajnarine Persaud, of 18 Catherine, Mahaicony. The man was in state of shock and did not speak to this newspaper.However, his niece, Shantie Persaud, who resides across the road, said that she had noticed smoke emanating from the upper flat of the building and rushed across the road.“I heard screams on the road and I looked out and saw the house burning and I ran over, straight up the stairs and I got him out…and the fire was already in the house,” she related to this newspaper last evening.She said her uncle, was conscious at the time, but she said at the same time he was disoriented.Persaud lived alone at the time of the fire, since his wife and children reside in the United States.Shantie Persaud lamented the late arrival of the fire tender from the Onverwagt Station at West Coast Berbice. “[The] Fire service took a very long time; when they came they didn’t have no water—they had to go to a trench and get it!” she added.“The man’s house was already burnt to the ground,” she complained. “Luckily he did not sustain any injury.”Rajnarine Persaud lost everything in the fire, including his travel documents and other important items. He is currently staying at his niece’s residence. |
