Police have detained the owner of a car which was abandoned by bandits at Industry, East Coast Demerara on Friday night, after the criminals had committed a daring robbery on an Atlantic Gardens businessman.The 24-year-old car owner, who hails from the Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, reported to police that he was the victim of a carjacking during which he was struck on his head and knocked unconscious only to awake six hours later.The abandoned getaway car. That was when he said that he went to report the matter.At the time, the police were unaware that the car that the man was speaking about was recovered by their counterparts on the East Coast of Demerara.This newspaper understands that there was no detective at the station when the initial report was made so the man subsequently went to the Grove Police Station around 08:00 hours yesterday and reported his story again.This time the police there had in their possession a copy of the Kaieteur News with the story of the abandoned car that was involved in the robbery the previous night.They became suspicious and after questioning the man, they found that his story was unconvincing and they promptly detained him.Investigators also suspect that the man is linked to several car break-ins in the Diamond/Grove area.He was later handed over to investigators on the East Coast of Demerara who are probing Friday night’s robbery. |
