| Guyana has recorded a 100 percent pass rate, with Grade One to Three, in the offered subject areas of Theatre Arts, Physical Education and Sports at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examination. There were also excellent performances in the technical/vocational subject areas, according to Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh.The Minister also revealed that in the area of building technology, the performance improved from last year’s 73.4 percent to 89.3 percent; Clothing and Textiles from 79.9 percent to 87.7 percent while the performance in Electricity and Electronics Technology soared to 67.5 percent, up from 49.8 percent which was reflected in last year’s performance. Food and Nutrition mounted from 81.9 percent in 2009 to an even 90 percent this year.Grade One to Three passes in Information Technology soared from 12.5 last year to 86 percent this year. According to the Minister, in the Industrial Technology subjects – Building Technology (Construction) and Building Technology (Woods) there were excellent performances in Grade One to Three. Satisfactory performances were recorded in Grade One to Three passes, while excellent performances were observed in Grade One to Four passes for Technical Drawing and Mechanical Engineering Technology. Electrical and Electronic Technology has shown significant improvement in Grade One to three passes from 49.81 percent last year to 67.57 percent this year.The Minister has also expressed satisfaction with the performance of English B which recorded a 65.5 percent pass rate, up from last year’s 38.4 percent. Performance in English B moved from unsatisfactory in 2009 with 38.4 percent (Grade One to Three) to satisfactory this year with 65.54 percent (Grade One to Three).“We have made English B (Literature) almost compulsory now so we expect that will increase the performance of English A. I am impressed, really impressed with the performance this year.”Grade One to Three and Grade One to Four pass rate in English A showed significant improvement, according to the Minister, moving from 50.29 percent in 2009 to 59.16 percent in 2010 for Grade One to Three and 78.86 percent in 2009 to 86.34 percent this year for Grade One to Four.The subject area of Biology reflected improved candidate performance moving from 68.2 last year to 70.2 percent this year. Baksh noted that the performance in Human and Social Biology was satisfactory with 70.21 percent (Grade One to Three) and 94.4 percent (Grade One to Four). Caribbean History, he said, showed significant improvement from last year where 43.76 percent was recorded to 60.48 percent this year.There was however a decline in the pass rate for Chemistry which recorded a 60.4 percent pass rate down from 70.1 last year. The performance in Economics, which has been running for the past two years, also recorded a decline in the performance rate, Baksh stated.In the Modern Languages subjects, French and Spanish recorded satisfactory performances in Grade One to Three passes. Grade One to Three passes in French were 74.03 percent while Spanish Grade One to Three passes were 57.20 percent.Meanwhile, the Grade One to Three performances in Mathematics and Visual Arts were less than 50 percent. Mathematics recorded 34.51 percent and Visual Arts recorded 47.35 percent. However, there was an increase in the Grade One to Three passes in Mathematics. |
