The Environmental Community Health Organization (ECHO) is calling on businesses and corporations to pay attention to the way they dispose of their garbage, especially old electronic components.According to ECHO, notwithstanding the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce’s code of ethics launched last year, many corporations are still practicing improper dumping of waste in several sections of Guyana. The environmental body stated that many of these corporations do not have proper storage facilities on their premises nor can they account for the way their waste is disposed of in the wider environment. ECHO is concerned about two types of waste: e-waste and domestic waste.“Derelict computers and allied equipment,NBA Store, including batteries and other components of electronic gadgets are stored in the back of business places gathering dust and causing a public health nuisance to workers, or just thrown out with the regular waste. Either way it is becoming a very serious problem in this country,” ECHO said in a recent statement. It added that many offices display computers in public work spaces, that are either defective or not in working order. These things, ECHO said, have implications for the health of workers and the public, and the way energy is utilised by companies and organisations in delivering goods and services to consumers.“Thrown out, many of the derelict computers and printers and batteries are stripped by litter-pickers for various parts. This by itself is a dangerous practice.”Batteries with toxic chemicals are mostly likely polluting the environment. There is also the situation where used computers are donated to poor companies and organisations. Some entities use this approach to get rid of the burden of recycling or disposing of such e-waste in an environmentally friendly manner. These computers work for a few years then have to be dumped, with the burden of disposal placed on the already poor organisations to which they were donated.According to ECHO, although this problem is now emerging almost unnoticed by community leaders, it should serve as a springboard to begin discussions on it, to ensure checks and balances on the importation and donation of such equipment; to put in place stringent guidelines, and to enforce existing ones on the disposal of such electronic waste in the wider environment. On the question of regular waste, ECHO said that on any given day,http://www.airmaxfantasy.us.com/1600-New-Balance/, one can see empty boxes and other wrappers carrying the trade names of big corporations crudely discarded on roadsides or in canals. Also, at some creeks and other resorts and along highways,NFL Jerseys From China, the situation is becoming very worrying with scattered refuse and litter disrupting the beauty of the landscape in those parts. It can be argued that consumers just throw these wrappers and other garbage in the streets and water- ways.“However,NFL Jerseys Supply, this signals the need for corporations to do more to encourage customers to protect local communities and the natural environment from the consequences of illegal litter. Perhaps, there is need to promote the benefits of recycling and even invest in the appropriate equipment. Also, businesses could incorporate environmental awareness in their planning and customer relations service. They should also ensure that they have proper disposal bins on their premises for the convenience of their customers.”ECHO is of the view that good corporations are good stewards of the environment because prudent stewardship of the environment is vital to sustainable development and the profitability of corporations. Moreover, it is part of corporate social responsibility.Meanwhile,Cheap Sports Jerseys, ECHO’s Executive Director Royston King has indicated that the organization is in the planning stage of a seminar on corporate social responsibility,Jerseys From China, which is scheduled for August 16 at Cara Lodge. The seminar will be aimed at raising awareness about sustainable business practices. |
