Maria’s Delight is the name of a village in Essequibo.“We all know that rice is one of the most important food staples around the world and it is the number one food stable here. In recent years we have been producing more and more rice and we have been exporting more and more,” Persaud stated. He also stressed that the GRDB will be developing more and more variety along the way to increase yields.“For the past five years we cultivated over 68,000 hectares of land and last year we cultivated about 94,000 hectares which means we had a 37 per cent increase,” the GRDB Chairman boasted. He added that the export rate grew from 314,000 tonnes of rice in 2010 to 501,000 last year, a 60 per cent increase.Kaieteur News was told that seven tonnes of the new varieties can be expected per hectare and will be sold at a higher price when compared to the prices the existing rice are being sold for both local and internationally. The President said that it is important to recognize that Guyana is a small player in the international market, hence, it is essential this sector to continue to develop.“We are price takers, we don’t determine the international market and therefore it means that we have to do things to ensure our viability.“We have to do things more efficiently in the first instance; and research and develop into new variety is extremely important and vital to the development of the industry,” the President said.At the end of the ceremony, the GRDB presented a token to the president for the support of his administration and also to the Ministry of Agriculture.
