| – three detainedFive bandits escaped with two firearms and an undisclosed sum of cash and jewellery on Thursday night after invading a business couple’s Belvedere, Corentyne home. Police have since detained three men in connection with the robbery.Businessman Haseeb Hussain, 48, who runs a gas station and grocery, was beaten with a cutlass and handgun during the attack.According to a police report, the businessman’s wife, Hemwattie Hussain, was at the front gate at around 19:15 hrs on Thursday when the five men approached and held her at gunpoint. While, two of the men remained outside, the other three took her into the bottom flat where they confronted Haseeb Hussain, who was in a hammock. The men dealt him several blows to his head and body with a cutlass and the handgun while demanding cash and jewellery. Kaieteur News understands that they then took the businessman into the upper flat, where they proceeded to take away Haseeb Hussain’s licensed .32 pistol and 9 matching rounds and his licensed 12-gauge shotgun, along with an undisclosed sum of cash and a quantity of jewellery.Haseeb Hussain had a scuffle with one of the men during the robbery but was forced to desist after a round was discharged. The five men then escaped, discharging rounds indiscriminately into the air while doing so.Two live 12 -gauge cartridges, two spent shells and a cutlass were recovered at the scene by the police.According to a police statement, mobile patrols comprising police and army ranks quickly responded and roadblocks were established at strategic positions. Kaieteur News understands that the ranks subsequently arrested two brothers at Williamsburg, Corentyne, who had previous brushes with the law.According to a source, the men, who were sitting in a car, claimed that they were waiting to take passengers to the Upper Corentyne. A third man was subsequently arrested. |
