Northern Manitoba a leader in global Northern agriculture
The Northern Harvest Forum 2009, co ordinated by Food Matters Manitoba, took place in Thompson on Oct. 22 and 23 with the theme of Air Max Thea Nz "Northern Food from Northern Hands."
The two day event, which has taken place Supra Skytop 2 in the North for three years now, featured workshops that focused on hunting and gathering traditional foods; food preservation; gardening; grocery store and healthy cooking demonstrations and more. Also, a World Food Day dinner took place at the Legion Hall on Oct. 22 that featured the Golden Carrot Awards ceremony which honours Northern community food champions.
The Golden Carrot Awards saw Manitobans honoured in different categories, including rural, Northern, urban, media, business and education community food champions. At the dinner in Thompson six of the champions were recognized for their work.
Hilda Holmstrom, the mayor of Pelican Rapids, Man., has been promoting gardening in her community. Both the school and health centre in Pelican Rapids have created community gardens.
Jeff Ashley, a resident of Dauphin River, has been encouraging everyone in his community to have their own garden. Food Matters Manitoba says Ashley has been instrumental in getting a community garden established in Dauphin River and has done most of the labour on the 40 x 100 plot, while also marinating the gardening tools and equipment.
From Hollow Fake Ray Ban Wayfarer.html Water First Nation, Gladys Williams works at the community's health centre as a prenatal nutrition program worker. Part of her work is highlighting traditional food and economical store bought foods that are also healthy. During the past four summers Williams has created a garden beside the health centre where she grows a variety of vegetables. She has been inviting people to help harvest the vegetables and shows them how to prepare healthy meals. Williams has also been teaching others how to can vegetables and make jams and jellies.
Heather Souter has been working to secure access to affordable, healthy food in her home community of Camperville, where she has established a food buying club and has Buy Timberlands Online worked to evolve the club into a co operative grocery store.
Eleanor Woitowicz is in charge of a school gardening project at the Mel Johnson School, where she teaches, in Wabowden. Over the Cheap Nike High Heels Nz past three years she's been able to establish 45 gardens in the homes of her students and is now involving elders in the process. A documentary film is currently being made about her project.
Coleen Rajotte is the Golden Carrot Awards' media nominee for her work on the Aboriginal Peoples' Television Network (APTN) series Vitality Gardening. Food Matters Manitoba calls Rajotte a "strong voice for traditional knowledge and people's ways."
Each honouree received a certificate at the awards ceremony, while Souter was announced as the winner of the Northern Golden Carrot Award.
Kreesta Doucette, executive director with Food Matters Manitoba, says many different communities have been participating in the Northern Healthy Foods Initiative.
"There are a lot of challenges that people in the North face but there are also a lot of resources. Some of the challenges include high food costs, and some communities not having access to grocery stores in their communities there are a lot of associated health risks," she explains. "On the flip side, because of their extremely high need, a lot of community members Polo Ralph Lauren Nz have decided to Ray Ban Clubmaster Price take the initiative to start gardens, raise chickens and look at freezer purchasing and peer lending programs."
According to Doucette, the initiative that Northerners have been making when it comes to healthy food is gaining notice from far and wide.
"The work that's happening in Northern Manitoba is being recognized across Canada and actually even internationally," she explains. "I've had the privilege of speaking at conferences and I always mention the work that's been happening in the North. I've had people from Korea, Australia and all over the world seem really interested. Northern Manitoba is really leading the way, I think, in Northern Nike High Heels 2014 agriculture across the globe."
Doucette adds that Food Matters Manitoba is looking at expanding its programming into Northern communities like Fox Lake, York Landing, Spit Lake, Tadoule Lake and more.
