Burlington peace activist
She began organizing a birthday celebration for a friend. And she completed her first book, a collection of writings about Palestine after decades of scholarship.
She died Jan. 17, three days after her 88th birthday.
Ward, a peace activist whose work had prominence around the world, had been a nun with the Sisters of Mercy in Burlington for nearly 70 years, Vibram Fivefingers Bikila Ls according to an obituary in the Burlington Free Press.
"Sister Miriam spent her entire life working for peace and justice," said Marianne Read, life and ministry administrator for the Sisters of Mercy. "She was truly passionate about it, she truly was."
Among her many roles, Buy Vibram Five Fingers Online India Ward was a founding member of Pax Christi Burlington, a Roman Catholic affiliated peace movement; a religion professor; a vocal opponent of war; and an advocate for peace in Latin America and the Middle East.
She was a controversial figure in Burlington. She protested for years against the Iraq War in front of the First Unitarian Universalist Society at the north end of Church Street demonstrations that drew counter protesters. She wrote dozens of letters to the editor, to the Burlington Free Press and elsewhere, and saw outraged letters in response.
Those who knew her said she did not get discouraged.
"You just knew that wherever she was, you ought to be there," Roddy O'Neil Cleary of South Burlington said. "She had a real sense of community and was always drawing people in."
Ward also taught in elementary and secondary schools, and Christian Louboutin Online Store Australia Patrick Leahy was among her students at St. Senator representing Vermont.
"Sister Miriam was a wonderful teacher," Leahy said in a statement this week. "I have always appreciated her encouragement to those of us in her classes to go way beyond the material assigned and her knowledge and ability to teach made us all want to learn. She was a treasure."
Ward's friend Bob Green remembers Ward as "an extraordinarily meticulous and deep kind of a scholar."
"Miriam is a national figure, international figure for her activism for Palestine," Green said. But Green said he also had noticed that Ward never spoke in anger about Israel.
"She taught me that I could support people who were being oppressed and not hate the persecutor," Green said.
Ward had a sense of humor and went against the "stern nun stereotype," Green said. Ward took up rollerblading in her 70s after her doctor recommended more exercise, he said.
"She didn't know the meaning of the word 'quit,'" Green said, "and she was a joyous kind of person. . Even the people who disagreed with her liked her."
Hank Lambert, a member of Pax New Balance Shop Perth Christi Burlington, said Ward's activism was motivated by her faith and by the "gospel of nonviolence." He said he will remember her persistence.
"If there was a meeting or an issue or she wanted to get people to a place, she would make literally dozens of phone calls just to get Cheap Vibram Five Fingers the word out," Lambert said.
Wafic Faour of Richmond, who is Palestinian, said he considered Ward a member of his family.
"We've been heartbroken as a family and as a Palestinian community in Vermont," Faour said. "She took a very difficult mission like the Palestinian question. . She never, never, never wavered."
The book Ward completed just before her death is titled "Behind the Wall: Palestinians Under Occupation." Green Pandora Charms Australia Cheap and other friends said they would make sure the work is published.
One of the Bible readings Ward chose for her funeral, Read said, is a passage from the book of Micah: "This is what God asks of you: To act justly, to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with your God."
