Great Cornard school 'minutes from destruction'
Only the quick action of firefighters ensured Great Cornard Upper School was not engulfed in flames after a timber shed next to the music block was set alight on Boxing Day.
John Bromley, Sudbury's sub officer, said: "This was as Nike Air Force 1 Price Australia close as it gets. We were just minutes away from the school being partially or completely destroyed by fire.
"If it wasn't for members of the public calling us so quickly and the lads in the fire crews performing so professionally it is quite likely there would not have been an upper school in Great Cornard."
He said the "idiotic" action of the arsonists could have resulted in a "Newmarket school scenario", referring to the arson attack that gutted St Felix Middle School in Newmarket earlier this year.
Emergency services in Sudbury received reports that black smoke was billowing from the school just before 4pm.
When two crews from Sudbury and one from Long Melford arrived, flames were leaping from bins inside the timber building, which also contained electric cables, and the exterior of the music department had suffered serious scorch damage.
Mr Bromley said: "It was a challenging job, as the building is in the middle of the school grounds. Whoever lit the fire knew how to New Balance Factory Outlet break into the school, and where to locate the bins."

He said: "Arson is always treated as a really serious offence and people who start fires are dangerous individuals who may well end up causing someone really serious harm or worse.
"An arson attack like this which causes damage to a building is likely to attract a long prison sentence, and rightly so."

Peter Beer, chairman of Great Cornard Parish Council, condemned the arsonists.

Mr Bromley said the fire service dealt with five arson attacks, including the school attack, over Christmas.
"It probably seems like a lot of fun to youngsters, but they need to be aware their actions could result in someone losing their life," he added.
