And while the area has changed geographically, Hurwitz's feelings about it remain unaltered.
"We basically have a philosophy where we listen to our customers. They guide us. We pay attention to ZIP codes," he said, adding that many customers at the Mayfield Heights location were traveling from further east.
Howard's Jewelry Center finds itself a rarity in the tough economy.

Baszuk added, "With that kind of selection of loose diamonds, the customers have so many more options based on their sense of style and their pocketbook."
