Mkuranga is a town less than an hour's drive south from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's historic capital. It's also a place that has seen lion attacks recently. Lions have been known to kill as many as 1 hundred Tanzanians a year.
The landscape is usually lush and tropical inside Mkuranga. But the roads are clogged with trucks laden by using charcoal, alongside children trucking water and women carrying containers on their heads. Dennis Ikanda is one of Craig Packer's Tanzanian research workers. He's been hired to examine the man eating lions. Another one of Packer's longtime researchers, Bernard Kissui, is working on that dilemna. He takes us to a compact village near Tarangire National Park.
