The victim, reportedly also 25, and known only as ‘Fine Man’,Kanken Backpack Sale, fled to the back of the premises where he collapsed.Massay had recently completed a stint in the Camp Street jail and was invited to the music cart operation by the man he later killed. He reportedly told the police that he killed Fine Man.He made no attempt to escape and was taken into custody at the scene. Kaieteur News was told that the men would normally take turns sleeping in the hammock, which is reportedly owned by the victim. A resident recalled passing the two men at around midnight and seeing the suspect sleeping in the hammock while the other man was sleeping on the ground.Both men had only recently begun working at the Camp Street establishment.Police said that the suspect claimed that he was sleeping on a piece of tarpaulin he had spread on the ground when the other employee began to curse him and attacked him with an ice-pick. He reportedly told investigators that he retaliated by stabbing his assailant in the stomach.“He claimed that if he had a phone he would have called for help because he felt sorry for the other man,” a source said.Kaieteur News was told that the suspect lived on the streets and was often picked up by the police.The owner of the establishment said both men were quiet individuals. He said that the suspect was an excellent worker who could be trusted with financial transactions, but who also occasionally showed signs of mental illness.The owner said that he recently took away a cutlass from the worker and saw him with a large knife a few days later. |
